We all need someone to lean on when it comes to wisdom. Just recently I found some handwritten notes of mine from Napoleon Hill’s 17 principles of purpose.
It seemed like a chore at the time to handwrite them out, but I realize now re-reading this most insightful list, that I learn a lot more by actually writing out important teachings rather than just reading the material. It really does help to write out passages of work from books and in that act your own inner charm of happiness develops into its own muscle.
Napoleon Hill was born in Virginia in 1883 and died in 1970, after a long and successful career as a consultant to business leaders, a lecturer and an author. Think and Grow Rich is the all-time bestseller in its field, having sold 15 million copies worldwide, and setting the standard for today’s motivational thinking.
Here are the 17 principles of purpose by Napoleon Hill:
1. Successful people move on their own initiative but they know where they are going before they start.
2. No man can become a permanent success without taking others along with him.
3. You can do it if you believe you can.
4. The most successful people are those who serve a great number of people.
5. It is essential that you develop a pleasing personality - pleasing to yourself and others.
6. Today’s employer usually is yesterday’s employee who found opportunity waiting for him at the end of the second mile.
7. A positive mind finds a way it can be done…A negative mind looks for all the ways it can’t be done.
8. To be enthusiastic – act enthusiastically.
9. Direct your thoughts, control your emotions and ordain your destiny.
10. Truth will be truth, regardless of a closed mind, ignorance or the refusal to believe.
11. Keep your mind on the things you want and off the things you don’t want. Remember the old proverb: “Be very careful what you set your heart on, for you will surely achieve it.
12. Harmonious co-operation is a priceless asset, which you can acquire in proportion to your giving.
13. Remember: every defeat, every disappointment and every adversity carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.
14. The imagination is the workshop of the soul, wherein are shaped all plans for individual achievement.
15. A sound mind in a sound body, is a short but full description of a happy state in the world.
16. Tell me how you use your spare time and how you spend your money, and I will tell you where and what you will be ten years from now.
17. You are where you are and what you are because of your established habits, thoughts and deeds.
If you haven’t picked up a copy of Think & Grow Rich, I highly recommend it goes on your list of things to do and read for 2011.
Have a beautiful day,
